Home Maintenance Tasks You May Not Have Considered - Part 2

As a new homeowner, there can be a learning curve to figuring out exactly what types of maintenance needs to be performed on your home. From basics likes cleaning the gutters to more obscure chores like keeping your window wells clean. At Gattermeir Davidson, we not only want to help you find the perfect home at the Lake of the Ozarks, but we also want to help you maintain your home for as long as you'll be living there.

Last week, we posted Part 1 of Home Maintenance Tasks You May Not Have Considered, and we talked about your water heater, garage door, window weep holes and more. This week we have a few more tasks you might want to know about to keep your home in tip-top condition.

Check for High Water Pressure

Every home is different, but some homes may have unusually high water pressure. If your home shows signs of this, it may be something you want to investigate. High water pressure is not only hard on your appliances, harm your pipes, and even waste valuable water in your home.

Clean Refridgerator Coils

This can be a very easily forgotten task, but without it, you could be looking at higher energy bills and a refrigerator that doesn't last you nearly as long. You can purchase a special brush from most hardware stores, or even online, and it's specially made to get in between all of the small crevices.

Keep Window Wells Clean

Your window well is the U-shaped piece of tin or plastic that fits around the outside of your basement windows. Sometimes they are used for emergency exit purposes, other times to allow a window for natural light in a below grade basement. If you allow leaves to pile up inside your window well, it could act as a pool liner during heavy rains, and water could build up inside your well eventually breaking your basement window - and causing a minor flood. You can clean the window wells out and then purchase a cover to keep rain and even small animals from getting in.

Lubricate Garage Door Springs

While the springs of your garage door will eventually need to be replaced due to fatigue or corrosion, you can help slow the process by spraying garage door lubricant on them. This can be a bit of a messy job, though, so put a piece of cardboard behind the springs to protect your walls.

Check For Mice Nests

As we move into winter, there are also a few other critters that will be moving. Mice love to find warm places to enjoy the winter, unfortunately, those places just so happen to be your home. They love window AC units, lawn mowers, dryer vents, and if they find a good hole, even your home. Take a few moments to check around for nests and remove them properly or risk them tearing apart the area or chewing through wires.
