Organization Tips for Making the Most of Small Spaces

Living a minimalist lifestyle and fitting into small houses has become a bit of a trend for some. With this lifestyle, you also have to try to either find a way to organize your belongings, or do without. When buying a house at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can find many homes that have a small feel without being too cramped or uncomfortable - and we would love to help you find the perfect home. Whether you have a small house or you just want to get a handle on the clutter, here are a few easy ways you can organize the spaces in your home!

Purge Your Space

The first step to organizing your home is to purge all of the items in your home. You aren't just looking for "clutter," though. Sometimes the items that you need to purge are not necessarily clutter, but items that don't fulfill a purpose in your home. When you think about the items that you have, if they have a dual purpose, keep it! If you have several items that have the same purpose, you may want to get rid of one. This will keep your space from becoming cluttered.

If this task seems overwhelming, take one space at a time. Tackle the bathroom first, by organizing under the sink, throwing out expired medications, replacing ratty towels that you don't use, etc. Then move your way to the laundry room or kitchen. Eventually, as you tackle each space you will have purposefully purged each space - even if it takes you several weekends.

Think Vertically

This is especially important when you live in a smaller space, but can also be useful in a large space as well. When organizing, you want to always move up, since moving out isn't as much of an option. If you can find shelves, cabinets, and hutches, these can help improve the space you have. One of the best tips to keep in mind is to never use your floor as storage space. If you find that items are piling up on your floor, like toys, clothes, pillows, etc ... find a way to organize them and give them a place. This will reduce the cluttered feeling in the room and keep everything feeling open.

Maximize Closet Space

A shelf and a rod are very rarely enough when it comes to organizing a closet. If anything, you want to have a few shelves, and several rods. You can find closet systems, where all you have to do is install the shelves and rods per the instructions, or you can design your own system. The idea is to have a place for everything while making use of every square inch of your closet. Keeping a show rack on the floor of the closet or on the back of the door can keep the shoes from cluttering up the floor. Using shelves and cute totes can be a great way to organize sweaters, belts, hats, and other accessories without having them piling up on the shelf and falling off.
