Christmas Tree Tips for a Merry Accident-Free Christmas!!

Once the Christmas Tree is up and decorated, I feel like the holiday season has officially started!!  That means Christmas carols, stockings, FOOD, candy canes, cheesy Christmas movies and so much more at our house.

But before all the festivities begin, there are a few Christmas Tree safety tips that you can follow to help keep your Christmas Safe and Accident free!!

Real Tree Tips:
  • Purchase FRESH trees because they are more flame resistant than older trees.
  • Live trees should only be used for about 2 weeks because they become very dry and more flammable.
  • Saw off  a bit of the base before putting your real tree in the stand - this will allow the tree to absorb more water and stay hydrated and fresh.
  • Water your real tree daily to prevent it from becoming dry.
  • Keep your tree away from your source of heat (furnace, fire place, space heaters etc) to avoid evaporation of the daily water.
General Christmas Tree Tips
  • Put your tree close to an outlet to avoid dangling extension cords.
  • Check all your lights before hanging them - be sure to replace missing or broken bulbs.
  • Do not place any lit candles near your tree.
  • Make sure all of your lights are UL approved.  Lights will have a tag stating their approval rating.
  • Do not use outdoor lights on your tree or indoor lights for your outdoor display.
  • Unplug your tree each night or when leaving your home.
