6 Tips To Break The Ice With Your New Neighbors

Of all the potential concerns that face prospective homebuyers at the Lake of the Ozarks, meeting their new neighbors is often at the forefront. Even if you find the home of your dreams, your new neighbors will probably have a huge impact on how much you enjoy living there. Because your neighbors will play such a huge role in your new life at your new home, it's important to break the ice and establish a comfortable rapport with them. This week, our team of trusted real estate agents at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you do just that!

When You're Moving Into The Neighborhood
As the newcomer to the neighborhood, you will most likely be anxious to meet your new neighbors and get a feel for your new neighborhood's culture. Do the nearby homeowners get together frequently, for example? Will it be acceptable to knock on their doors and ask for a cup of flour? Here are a few tips to help you break the ice with your new neighbors.

1. Introduce Yourself While You're Still House Shopping.
If you happen to notice the neighbors outside when you are viewing the home for the first or second time, introduce yourself. This can be a great way to gather some information about the neighborhood and surrounding homeowners before you choose to buy the home in question (which, in some situations, can prove incredibly valuable). If you do end up purchasing the home, you will already have your initial introductions out of the way.

2. Go For Walks Around The Neighborhood.
The easiest way to meet your neighbors is to simply put yourself in situations where your paths are likely to cross. By regularly walking your dog or going for runs around your new neighborhood, you will be more likely to catch them outside and have the opportunity to introduce yourself. (Having your dog with you can be especially helpful, because pets serve as great ice-breakers.)

3. Visit Their Garage Sales.
Garage sales are huge part of the Lake of the Ozarks culture (especially in the Four Seasons area). If one of the homes on your block opens its doors for a garage sale, make it a point to stop by and say hello. Your neighbors will probably be too busy to stay and chat for long, but this can still provide a great opportunity to introduce yourself.

When You're The Current Resident In The Neighborhood
Just as moving into a new neighborhood can be a bit nerve-wracking, so can having someone new move into your neighborhood. Will their kids get along with yours? Will they be conscientious of noise levels and respectful of your boundaries? These suggestions can help you break the ice with the newcomers.

1. Bring Them Food.
Casserole, pizza, cookies, pie... It doesn't really matter what kind it is - everyone loves free food! Welcoming your new neighbors to the area with an edible housewarming gift can be a fun, easy way to get things started on a positive note.

2. Knock On Their Door.
Everyone wants to feel welcomed. As the newcomers to the area, your new neighbors might be hesitant to come up to your house and make introductions; they will almost always be very appreciative if you make come introduce yourself first. If you want to go above and beyond, give them your phone number and offer to help them out if they need anything as they get settled in.

3. Invite Them To Something.
Including your new neighbors in local events (such as block parties or community events) is an excellent way to welcome them to your area. If there are not any major events coming up, simply inviting them into your own house for dinner will go a long way.
