Don't Leave Those Leaves!

Fall has fallen, and it's time to make sure your home is prepared! Every year, the autumn season brings wonderfully brisk weather, amazing food, beautiful colors - and leaves. Of course, after they fall to the ground they become a little less beautiful, and a little more of a hassle. At Gattermeir Davidson, we know how important it is to keep your home in good repair, whether you're selling it, just buying it, or have been living at the Lake of the Ozarks for years. Here are a few reasons that the fall leaves are not good for your yard, and how to remove them!

Why Should You Remove the Fall Leaves?

One of the main reasons you want to clean up your leaves is because it can affect the quality of your grass, and the ability for it to come back up again in the spring. Wet leaves that sit on your grass can create an environment that's perfect for mold, mildew and disease. The sooner you get them cleaned off your yard, the better chance your grass will survive till the next season.

Also, remember that wet leaves can be a hazard to other people who walk across the hard surfaces in your yard. They make it difficult to see cracks, pits, and other flaws in your sidewalk. By cleaning them up now, you can help increase the safety around your home.

Best Ways to Clean The Leaves In Your Yard

1. Get the leaves into a pile
You can achieve this by raking them up, with either a rake, leaf blower, a walk-behind, gas-powered leaf blower. Do you have a large yard? You can also use a walk-behind  power vacuum to collect and shred leaves. You can also consider a heavy-duty leaf vacuum that attached to your riding lawnmower and has an impeller that grinds up leaves, reducing them to a 10-to-1 ratio.

2. Collect the leaves
First, you'll want to know what your disposal method is going to be. If you will be composting the leaves, you can rake them up onto a large plastic tarp, and drag the leaves over to the compost pile. If you are collecting them for town pick-up, you'll want to dump them into a bag. You can also use a cardboard collar to hold the bag open, or fold the top of the bag over a large trashcan until it's full.

3. Dispose of the leaves
You will need to know if there are any ordinances that are already in place for the handling of your leaves. If you live outside of town, you can blow them into the woods if you own any around you. You can also bag them up - but you'll want to know the appropriate bag type. Some towns only pick up leaves in clear plastic bags, while others require recyclable paper bags. Some towns will vacuum them up as long as you rake them to the curb. You can compost them, and use them as your brown matter that provides carbon to your compost. You can also mulch them and return them back to the ground.

Owning a home can require a little bit of extra work, but it can be extremely rewarding in the end. Are you looking for a place to call your own this winter?
