Packing Tips For Moving Into Your New Home

Packing is inevitably one of the most time-consuming and potentially stressful parts of moving, but it doesn't have to be. By utilizing a few tips now, you can save yourself time and energy on packing, as well as money too! At eXp Realty, not only do we assist you in the purchase of your homes at the Lake of the Ozarks, but we also want to give you tips on how to move your belongings from one home to the next. Here are a few tips to remember as you're packing up your home.

Get Started Early
Even if you're a fast packer, you can never start too early. Give yourself a couple of weeks to really sort through the items, and organize while you pack. Start with items that you don't use often like china or books.

Pack Your Items Strategically
Pack all of the immediately needed items in one box, and label them with a star. Or better yet, pack them in suitcases or clothes hampers so you can easily access them. You would want to include clothes, toiletries, a few rolls of toilet paper, towels, sheets and bedding, and kitchen utensils you may need immediately, etc.

Designate a Packing Space
Momentum is key when packing up your home, so put all of the things you need to pack in one space to help make it easier. Grab your boxes, tape, markers, tissue paper/newspaper, and use this space to get in the packing zone.

Be Green In Your Packing
You can buy new boxes from places like Uhaul, but you can also find used boxes in other places and help protect the earth. Some stores have locations in the back of the building where you can pick up extra boxes and then reassemble them when you get home. U-Haul also offers a Take a box, Leave a box. You can go to their location and take gently used boxes for packing, and then leave them for someone else if they are still in good condition!

Don't Load Heavy Boxes
While you may think that large boxes hold lots of big things, and small boxes hold small things, it's actually just the opposite. Use your large boxes to hold large and light items. You can put pillows, blankets and clothes in the large boxes, and save the small boxes for things like your books.

Don't Pack Air
Never put an empty suitcases or dressers. You can leave the clothes in them and just pack them the way they are. You can take the drawers out to move them, but leave the clothes inside, it will take less time. Likewise, don't pack an empty suitcase. Wrap your kitchen dishes and store them in there, or even pack them with the important items that you'll need when you arrive at your new home.

Trash Bags Are Great
While boxes are great moving tools, you can also utilize trash bags because they squish easily into awkward spaces. Fill them with soft non-breakables and see how easily they can fill the little spaces.

Hang Clothes
Don't waste time packing hanging clothes and the hangers that they belonged on. Instead, take all of the clothes in your closet and lay them across the backseat of your car, and then transfer them directly to the next closet.

Use Packing Supplies You Already Have
Set aside your blankets and beach towels and use them for packing. You can wrap and tape them around artwork and lamps, as well as a cushion. You can also use these for protecting large furniture from scratches.
