Now that the Christmas parties are over, the gifts have been unwrapped and leftovers are almost gone, it's time to take down the holiday decorations. While it's easier to deck the halls than un-deck them, there are a few ways you can make the process easier. From having the correct storage bins, to creative ways to store your Christmas lights, here are a few ways you can make the packing easier, and the unpacking even easier next year.
Invest in Appropriate Storage
You and your attic will both thank you for investing in clear plastic bins. You won't have to dig through storage trying to find the right box this way. Make sure that you get the correct size as well. While you'll want the bin to be large enough to hold many items, you don't want it so large that you can easily overfill it, making it too heavy to lift. If you choose one style that you like and buy many of them, it will be easier to stack them than if you buy several different styles.
Help Your Ribbons Keep Their Shape
When you use ribbons for decorating, keep the spools so that you can wind them back up. This is especially good for the wired kinds. If you threw the spools away already, you can use paper towel rolls and tape one end to the roll before winding. For bows that are shaped, stuff tissue paper in the loops to keep them from being crushed. You can also store your ribbons in zip-top bags to keep them from getting any moisture.
Keep Your Fabric Fresh
It will be easier to get stains out of your tablecloths, tree skirts, and stockings when you wash them before you store them. After they're completely dry, fold them neatly and store in an oversized zip-top or vacuum seal bag. You can also add some dryer sheets to help them smell fresh when you pull them out next year.
Prevent Tangled Lights
When facing the arch-nemesis of Christmas decorating, there are a few tips that can make it easier to store them. One of the easiest methods to keep them from tangling quite as much is to roll them in a ball like yarn. Make sure that you leave the plug-in end of the strand on the outside so you can easily check to make sure they work next year.
Protect the Breakables
One of the best ways to protect your breakable ornaments is to save their original packaging. If that isn't possible, save the packaging from online gift orders and wrap each ornament in tissue paper, while layering bubble wrap between the layers. Also, be sure to store the most delicate ornaments on the top of the box, so the weight won't crush them.
Storing the Tree
If you have an artificial tree, you can store it inside plastic bins, the original box, or purchase special bags and cases for it. If you have a real tree, you can roll it in a tarp before taking it out of your home so that you have less mess. You can also find different places that will recycle it. In fact, Bridal Cave in Camdenton, MO is putting the trees in the Lake to help create a safe place for fish.
Store in Order
Finally, when yo are putting all of your decorations back into storage, make sure and arrange the boxes in the order that you'll need them. If the tree goes on first, make sure that it's the last thing stored so you'll have east access to it next year.
